MY JOURNEY

I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember and have always expressed myself in a variety of artistic ways. My dad is an outdoorsman and, as such, he was always out hunting, trapping, or fishing depending on the season. When I was born, he wanted to name me Jamin Hunter Fisher Trapper Taylor. My mother, being a bit more sensible, said he had to choose one, so Hunter it was. Being my father’s only son, it was only natural for him to want me to follow in his footsteps. I, however, had desires of my own and was always more interested in drawing or a number of other things that sparked a young boys imagination.

My love of birds and nature is rooted in my childhood, as my father would always record the first Robin sighting of the spring and would talk about all the colorful warblers and thrushes. It wasn’t until I had a son of my own that things came full circle. I discovered my latent love of birds first, then I decided that I had to try my hand at photographing them. I look back at those first photos with amazement. They are rough and amateur, but they got me started. With the encouragement of some of the more seasoned photographers, I kept at it. I went out to photograph birds almost every day, constantly practicing, and I improved one photo at a time. I continued to upgrade cameras and lenses as I gained experience and skill.

And so, I found myself back in the woods, hunting critters on my own terms and in my own way. Instead of a gun, I carry a camera. Instead of taxidermy on my wall, I have photos. Photography is always in season and there is no bag limit. I love what I do and being in the woods makes me feel alive. I chose the name J. Hunter Photography because it connects me to my roots and with what I love to do.
